Compacting dies (also called compression dies) compact stranded cables and wire ropes: the die presses the strand into a denser, smoother cross-section. Precise geometry determines the quality of the finished cable; a high surface finish reduces friction and extends tool life. Fritz Leng supplies compacting dies in tungsten carbide and ceramic grades, with coatings such as TiC/TiN, DLC or diamond, and also in split design.
What do compacting dies do?
In stranding and rope-making lines, individual wires are laid into strands and ropes. A compacting die compresses this composite: voids between the wires shrink, the cross-section becomes denser and rounder, the surface smoother. The optimum die geometry ensures the quality of the cable being produced — diameter, roundness and surface all depend on it.
Which designs and coatings does Leng supply?
We manufacture compacting dies in tungsten carbide and ceramic grades. Where friction and wear demand it, coatings are available: TiC/TiN, DLC and diamond coating. For applications where the die must be opened around the running product — for example on stranding machines — we also manufacture split compacting dies. Every die is made to order; geometry and material grade are matched to strand construction, lay-up and machine.
