Reconditioning or Replacement? A Decision Aid

A worn carbide drawing die rarely needs replacing: as long as the carbide core is intact and the next larger size fits your drawing schedule, reconditioning delivers a like-new tool at considerably lower cost than buying new. Replacement makes sense when the core is damaged, the next size does not fit the schedule — or a die has been recut so often that it has grown out of the drawing sequence.

Recognising wear: the drawing ring

The dominant wear pattern on a drawing die is ring wear at the wire's first point of contact in the reduction cone. It is treacherous because it feeds itself: the rough wear zone traps abrasive particles and deepens ever faster. Once scoring reaches the bearing, the wire loses size, roundness and surface — that is the latest point to act. Early signs in the process: rising drawing force, dull wire surface, growing size scatter.

The two stages of reconditioning

  1. Re-polishing (no size change):

    with early wear, the surface is polished back to a mirror finish — the diameter stays. The cheapest and fastest stage; used regularly, it clearly stretches the intervals between recuts.

  2. Recutting (to the next size):

    with drawing rings and scoring, the complete geometry is reground and polished; the bore grows to the next size in the schedule. The die continues there at full performance — like new.
